Solved Routing Vlan Over Multiple Routers Cisco Community Solved: hi there, i'm trying to get a vlan to share over two routers, but im stuck. i've read up on tons of stuff but nothing seems to fit in. i was wondering if someone could help me out. i've attached both the packet tracer and the topology jpeg. These are the basic steps to configure inter vlan routing in packet tracer. it’s recommended to read the cisco documentation on this topic for more details and best practices.

Solved Routing Vlan Over Multiple Routers Cisco Community Run a routing protocol between the 2 routers and you'll be able to get to the other side with no issue. or, if you don't want to do that, you can do it with static routing. Vlans are layer 2 constructs that do not extend across layer 3 routers. you can have two vlans with the same number separated by routers, but they are not the same vlan. Can anybody please explain why would one need a layer 3 switch router to route between multiple vlans?? for instance, let's say you have 2 switchs a and b. a and b have 2 vlans each. now i connect a and b with a trunk link. wouldn't the trunking protocol take care of delivering the frames to the appropriate destinations? thanks. 06 03 2007 11:05 am. I currently have a cisco test lab in which i am trying to add an isolated vlan to. the aim is to create a guest wifi solution which is totally separate to my live subnet.

I currently have a cisco test lab in which i am trying to add an isolated vlan to. the aim is to create a guest wifi solution which is totally separate to my live subnet. But there are three technologies that will allow you to wrap a vlan packet in something else for transmission. One of those does inter vlan routing and is connected to a netgear br200 router (and to the internet through an isp modem). after reading dozens of posts i almost got it working, but without internet access. To perform inter vlan routing it is important to have at least one layer 3 router (or a layer 3 switch acting as a router). when you have more than one router then you have redundancy. Now point is why & how is it possible to have same vlans with different i.p subnets on different i f of cisco router ? my understanding is that all layer 2 overheads are stripped off moment packet reaches the router i f and as router looks for s&d i.p (& next hop routers) so it should be ok to reuse the vlans over different interfaces of router.
